Customs codes are shared. HS 1404.90 covers coir pith and other plant materials, and Sri Lanka’s shipments to Pakistan under it are mostly betel leaves (US$17.6M in 2025 at US$1,278 per MT), so they are left out of the averages above. HS 5305.00 mixes coir fibre with grow bags and other moulded coir. An average across every grade and form is a guide to the market, not the price of one specification.

Markets that took under 900 t are left out, because a few shipments can swing their average. China and Japan bought the most at the lowest averages. The United States, Canada and Mexico paid the highest. Each figure is export value divided by weight, for every grade and form shipped to that country.

Why the price rose in 2025

Sri Lanka’s average for HS 1404.90 rose 27%, from US$409 to US$520 per metric ton, while the volume shipped more than doubled. India’s coir pith average rose from about US$358 to US$510 over the same period. In June 2026, Sri Lanka’s export development agency, the EDB, met exporters about a shortage of raw material that is driving up costs. Older price lists for cocopeat therefore tend to run low.

What changes the price

Washing and EC: washed, low-EC cocopeat costs more than unwashed pith, because it needs extra washing and drying.
Buffering: buffered cocopeat is treated to replace sodium and potassium before use, and is priced above unbuffered.
வடிவம்: 5 kg blocks, small bricks, discs, grow bags and loose bales are priced separately.
Mix: fine pith, chips and fibre are blended to order, and the ratio changes the price.
அளவு: a full container prices lower per ton than a pallet, and the price on the day you confirm counts.

Samples: a 9 oz (250 g) sample is available to buy online.
Testing: EC, pH and a washing report per batch, and an independent EC, pH, sodium and potassium test on request.
Incoterms: we quote FOB Colombo by default. CIF or CFR to your port can be quoted on request.

What is the price of cocopeat per ton?

Sri Lanka exported coir pith and similar products (HS 1404.90) at an average of US$520 per metric ton in 2025, about US$0.52 per kg, up from US$409 in 2024 (UN Comtrade, leaving out betel leaves shipped to Pakistan). Averages by destination ranged from US$379 for Japan to US$682 for Mexico. A firm price depends on washing, EC, buffering, form and quantity.

Why are cocopeat prices so different?

The same name covers unwashed pith in bales and washed, buffered grow bags ready for a greenhouse. Washing, buffering, the form and the order size each move the price, so an average covers a wide spread.

Why did cocopeat prices rise in 2025?

Sri Lanka’s export average rose 27% in 2025 as volume more than doubled, and India’s coir pith average rose too. In June 2026 Sri Lanka’s export development agency met exporters about a raw material shortage that is driving up costs.
