About Sri Lankan pineapple
Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is grown across Sri Lanka’s wet and intermediate zones, with the Gampaha and Kurunegala districts among the main growing areas. The variety most associated with the island is Mauritius, a small to medium fruit with yellow flesh and a sweet, aromatic flavor. Kew types are also grown and give a larger, juicier fruit.
Pineapple is non-climacteric: it does not continue to ripen after harvest, so it is picked at the shell color the market asks for. Export fruit is commonly graded by weight band and crown condition, then packed in ventilated cartons.
Common uses
- Fresh retail sale, whole or fresh-cut
- Juice and smoothie processing
- Food service and hotel buffets
- Drying and canning
Storage and documents
Fresh pineapple typically holds about two to four weeks at 7 to 10°C. Colder storage causes chilling injury, seen as internal browning. Fresh produce from Sri Lanka travels with a phytosanitary certificate issued by the National Plant Quarantine Service, a certificate of origin and a packing list. Some markets also ask for residue test results or a GAP certificate. Exact size grade, packing, MOQ and price are confirmed on the quote.
What to include in a quote request
A clear request usually states the variety, the size or weight band, the ripeness stage at packing, the carton type, the quantity per shipment and how often, the destination and whether air or reefer sea freight is planned. Fresh produce is seasonal and perishable, so dates and transit time matter as much as the price.
