Description

Hibiscus tea is made from roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa. The part used is the calyx, the thick red cup that surrounds the seed pod after the flower falls. Dried calyces brew a deep red, tart infusion that is drunk hot or iced and used in blends with black or green tea, fruit and spices. It is not the ornamental garden hibiscus.

Roselle is a newer crop in Sri Lanka, grown by a small number of farms in the dry zone. Supply is limited and seasonal, so tell us your yearly volume early.

Forms

  • Whole dried calyces for loose-leaf tea and retail
  • Cut hibiscus, sieved to size for tea bags and blends

What to check

Ask for moisture, foreign matter and microbiology results, and a pesticide residue test against your market’s limits. Good calyces are deep red and free of stems and seeds.
