About Ceylon cardamom

Green cardamom is the dried fruit of Elettaria cardamomum, a perennial plant of the ginger family. In Sri Lanka it grows in the shaded, humid mid and high country, especially around the Knuckles range and in the Kandy and Matale districts.

Pods are picked by hand just before they ripen fully and dried slowly to keep their green color. Cardamom is commonly traded by pod size in millimeters, color, and the share of split or empty pods.

Storage and documents

Whole pods hold their aroma well when kept sealed, cool and dark, typically one to two years. Buyers of organic product also ask for the organic certificate and a transaction certificate valid for their market. Importers commonly ask for a certificate of analysis covering moisture, volatile oil, ash and microbiology, plus aflatoxin and pesticide residue results for markets such as the EU, a phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of origin. What to include in a quote request

A clear request usually states the form (whole, cut or ground), the grade or specification bought to, such as moisture, volatile oil, density or size limits, the quantity per shipment and how often, the packing (bulk bags, cartons or retail packs), the destination port and the Incoterm, for example FOB Colombo or CIF. Mentioning the food safety standard or residue limits of the destination market helps the supplier confirm the right lot.
