Sri Lanka grows nutmeg in its wet midlands, alongside cloves and pepper, and distills part of the crop into nutmeg oil. The oil is steam distilled from dried nutmegs and is used in flavorings for beverages, baked goods and sauces, and in fragrance compositions. Mace oil, from the red aril around the seed, is a closely related oil available on request.

Typical specification

Nutmeg oil is bought on its gas chromatography (GC) profile. Buyers usually set ranges for sabinene, alpha and beta pinene, terpinen-4-ol and myristicin, plus specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation. Every lot ships with a GC report and a certificate of analysis, and a safety data sheet (SDS) is supplied with the order.

Handling

Store the oil cool and away from light in full, sealed containers. Essential oils are classed as dangerous goods for some transport modes, which we handle with the shipping documents.

Who buys it

Flavor and fragrance houses, essential oil distributors and aromatic ingredient traders. This oil is sold as an ingredient; we make no health claims for it.
