Description
Octopus is caught around Sri Lanka’s coast, mainly on reefs in the north and east, and landed alongside squid and cuttlefish. Sri Lankan seafood processors clean, grade and freeze it for export, and Sri Lanka exports far more octopus than it imports. Plants that pack for the EU must hold an approval number under Sri Lanka’s competent authority, and we work with such plants.
Forms
- Whole cleaned: gutted, with beak and eyes removed
- Flower cut: the tentacles spread in a flower shape, popular in Mediterranean markets
- IQF or block frozen, graded by piece weight
Quality points
Ask for the plant’s approval number, the catch area (FAO area 51 or 57), the glaze percentage and the net weight declaration with the quote. A health certificate travels with each shipment, and lab tests for heavy metals and microbiology can be arranged before loading.
Who buys it
Seafood importers and distributors, food service suppliers and restaurants in the Mediterranean, East Asia and the Gulf.
What to tell us for a quote
- The product, grade or specification you need, and a reference sample if you have one
- Quantity per order and how often you buy
- Pack size, packaging and labeling
- Destination port and the Incoterm you prefer
- Documents your market requires, such as a certificate of origin, phytosanitary or health certificate, or lab test reports
Packing and shipping
Chilled fish travels by air in insulated boxes with gel ice, and frozen product by reefer container or as frozen air cargo, quoted FOB Colombo, CFR or CIF. The cold chain is logged from packing to loading, and we confirm the airline or shipping schedule with the quote.
How to get a price: tell us the quantity, your specification and your destination port. We quote FOB Colombo, CFR or CIF, with lead time and minimum order, and arrange samples before an order.
