Sourcing Sri Lankan Ingredients for Supplement, Functional Food & Beverage Brands

Supplement capsules in a jar
Sri Lankan spices and export ingredients

Sri Lanka is an origin of choice for the supplement, nutraceutical and functional-food & beverage industries: true Ceylon cinnamon, tea, turmeric, black pepper, coconut-derived oils and steam-distilled spice oils all come from the island. But sourcing an ingredient for a daily-dose product is a different discipline from buying a spice. Across every one of these materials, the same three things decide the deal: the assayed active you are actually buying, the safety dossier behind it, and the claims rules you have to market within.

This is the hub for our buyer-by-ingredient playbooks. Each one is written for trade buyers, fact-checked against EFSA / BfR / EU and US regulatory sources, and deliberately claim-free. It is sourcing and regulatory information, not medical or nutritional advice.

Why Sri Lanka, for ingredient buyers

  • Genuine origin advantages: e.g. true Ceylon cinnamon’s low coumarin for daily-dose products, and single-origin traceability across tea, spices and coconut.
  • Duty efficiency: Sri Lanka holds EU GSP+ status, which can cut EU import duty on qualifying lines to 0% with a valid REX statement of origin.
  • Breadth: actives, oleoresins, essential oils, extracts and food-grade powders from one origin.

What every ingredient buyer should demand

Whichever ingredient you source, the same documentation protects your product and your label:

  • Identity / species confirmation: the right botanical (e.g. C. verum, Curcuma longa), excluding cheaper substitutes or bulking.
  • The assay: you are buying an active %: curcuminoids, piperine, EGCG/catechins, cinnamaldehyde, a fatty-acid profile. Tie price to a verified figure, not appearance.
  • Heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As, Hg): non-negotiable for daily-dose products; the lead screen is critical for turmeric in particular.
  • Microbiology & sterilization method, moisture/ash, and a pesticide-residue panel for EU-bound lots.
  • සහතික: Organic (with a per-shipment Transaction Certificate), ISO 22000/HACCP, Kosher/Halal as your channel requires.
  • Claims discipline: describe constituents, not effects. No health claim for these botanicals is authorized by EFSA, and US supplements may not claim to treat or prevent disease.
