Description

Sesame (thala in Sinhala, ellu in Tamil) is a traditional dry-zone crop in Sri Lanka, grown by smallholders in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Moneragala and Hambantota districts in the Yala season. Sri Lanka is a small exporter by world standards, so its sesame suits buyers who want Sri Lankan origin, smaller lots, or sesame in the same container as their spices, tea and coconut products.

Grades we supply

  • Natural (unhulled) sesame: cleaned and sorted, for oil pressing, bakery and roasting
  • White hulled sesame: mechanically hulled, for bakery toppings, tahini and confectionery
  • Black sesame: for Asian food, confectionery and specialty retail

Typical specification

Purity 99% to 99.95% depending on grade, moisture under about 6%, free fatty acid and oil content on request. Each lot can be tested for Salmonella, aflatoxin and pesticide residues to your market’s limits before shipping, and we keep a sealed sample from the lot.

Packing and shipping

25 kg or 50 kg PP or paper bags, or retail packs under your label. A 20 ft container holds about 18 to 19 tonnes. Sesame can share a container with other Sri Lankan products through our mixed-load service.

Import paperwork

Sesame is a plant product, so most markets ask for a phytosanitary certificate from Sri Lanka’s National Plant Quarantine Service. The EU checks sesame for ethylene oxide and Salmonella, so tell us your destination and we test to its rules.

Which documents come with the shipment?

Every export shipment carries a certificate of origin. Ask the desk which other certificates your country requires. Testing: Salmonella, aflatoxin, pesticide residues and ethylene oxide on request.

Can I check quality before a bulk order?

Yes. Start with a sample or trial lot. We can also arrange a pre-shipment inspection or an independent lab test for any order.

How do I pay safely?

First and trial orders of about USD 2,000 to 20,000 can be paid through Escrow.com, which releases the money only after you accept the goods. Larger orders are paid by letter of credit.
