Buying Coco Peat & Coir from Sri Lanka: A Grower’s & Importer’s Guide

Coconut coir fibre

Coconut coir fibre and coco peat

Coco peat, the pith left when coconut husk fibre is processed, has become the global benchmark growing medium for hydroponics, greenhouse horticulture and seedling propagation. Sri Lanka is one of the two dominant world suppliers, and its low-EC, well-buffered product is specified by professional growers from the Netherlands to North America. This guide explains the formats, the quality parameters that actually matter, and how to source coir and coco peat that performs.

Coir & Coco Peat Formats

“Coir” covers a family of products made from coconut husk. The ones buyers source most are:

  • Coco peat (coir pith): the fine, sponge-like growing medium. Sold as compressed 5 kg blocks, 650 g discs, grow bags/slabs, and loose bulk.
  • Coir fibre: the long bristle/mattress fibre used in mattresses, brushes, geotextiles and rope.
  • Coir chips/croutons: chunkier pieces blended into substrate for air porosity.
  • Value-added coir: geotextiles (erosion-control logs, blankets, netting), door/floor mats, and brush ware.

The Quality Parameters That Matter

Coco peat looks similar across suppliers but performs very differently. Specify these or you risk a crop failure:

ParameterWhy it mattersProfessional target
Electrical conductivity (EC)High salt damages rootsWashed: <0.5 mS/cm; low-EC: <0.3
pHNutrient availability5.5–6.8
BufferingStabilizes calcium/magnesium uptakeCa-buffered for hydroponics
Sodium / chlorideSalinity for sensitive cropsLow, by wash grade
Fibre : pith ratioAir vs water holdingSpecify per crop
ExpansionLiters of medium per block5 kg block ≈ 65–75 L
Buffered vs unbuffered: Raw coco peat naturally holds sodium and potassium on its cation-exchange sites, which it releases in exchange for calcium and magnesium, starving your crop of those nutrients early on. Calcium-buffered product has been pre-treated to prevent this. For hydroponics, specify buffered, low-EC, washed coco peat and ask for the batch EC/pH report.

Indicative 2025–2026 FOB Colombo: low-EC washed coco peat $160–420/MT depending on wash grade, buffering and format; grow bags and discs price per unit. Coir fibre and value-added coir (mats, geotextiles) are quoted per piece or per roll. MOQ is usually one 20-ft container for bulk coco peat; smaller for value-added items.

Packaging & Logistics

Compressed blocks load efficiently, a 20-ft container holds a large volume of expanded medium because the product ships compressed and dry. Confirm moisture content (dry product avoids freight weight penalties and mold) and palletisation. For hydroponic buyers, ask whether the exporter can supply consistent batch-to-batch EC, which matters more than headline price.

How to Source

  1. Specify use (hydroponics, propagation, landscaping), format, EC/pH and buffering.
  2. Request the batch EC, pH and washing report, plus organic-input documentation if you need it.
  3. Order a sample and run a small trial before committing to container volume.
  4. Source from marketplace-reviewed exporters and post a sourcing request for matched quotes.
