Description

Certified organic nutmeg, ground. A delicate sweet fragrance.

About nutmeg powder

Nutmeg powder is ground from the dried seed of Myristica fragrans. In Sri Lanka nutmeg grows in mid-country home gardens, mainly in the Kandy, Matale and Kegalle districts. The seed carries a warm, sweet aroma from volatile oils such as myristicin and sabinene.

Ground nutmeg is commonly traded by mesh size, volatile oil content and moisture. Because the aroma is held in volatile oil, freshly ground product is stronger than older stock.

Common uses

  • Baking, desserts and custards
  • Sauces, soups and meat dishes
  • Spice blends such as garam masala and pumpkin spice
  • Beverages

Storage and documents

Store sealed, cool and dark. Ground nutmeg typically keeps its aroma about a year, less than whole nuts. Buyers of organic product also ask for the organic certificate and a transaction certificate valid for their market. Importers commonly ask for a certificate of analysis covering moisture, volatile oil, ash and microbiology, plus aflatoxin and pesticide residue results for markets such as the EU, a phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of origin. Exact grade, packing, MOQ and price are confirmed on the quote.

What to include in a quote request

A clear request usually states the form (whole, cut or ground), the grade or specification bought to, such as moisture, volatile oil, density or size limits, the quantity per shipment and how often, the packing (bulk bags, cartons or retail packs), the destination port and the Incoterm, for example FOB Colombo or CIF. Mentioning the food safety standard or residue limits of the destination market helps the supplier confirm the right lot.
