Sri Lanka’s fishing fleet works the Indian Ocean around the island. Its catch includes skipjack tuna, seer fish (king mackerel, known locally as thora) and trevally, all popular in Sri Lankan, South Asian and Gulf cooking. Frozen whole fish exported about US$50 million in 2025.

Forms

Whole round, gutted, or cut into steaks, frozen and packed in cartons. Tell us the species, size grade per fish and the cut you need.

Seafood import rules

Seafood into the EU must come from a processing plant on the EU’s approved list for Sri Lanka, with a health certificate and, for wild catch, a catch certificate. The United States requires the importer to follow FDA seafood HACCP rules, and some species fall under the US Seafood Import Monitoring Program. Tell us your market and we confirm a plant that is approved for it.

Who buys it

Seafood importers and wholesalers serving South Asian and Gulf communities, and food-service buyers.
