Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) — the Premium Category
VCO is produced by cold-pressing fresh coconut meat (wet milling) without the use of heat or chemical solvents. This preserves the natural lauric acid profile and antioxidant content that drives the premium health market. Sri Lankan VCO is predominantly sourced from Kurunegala and Puttalam districts, where the Tall variety coconut is cultivated specifically for oil content.
Buyers sourcing VCO for the EU organic market should confirm that the exporter holds a valid EU Organic certificate under Regulation (EU) 2018/848, with a current Transaction Certificate (TC) for each shipment. US buyers require a USDA NOP certificate from an accredited certifier (CCOF, OMRI, Oregon Tilth, etc.).

Desiccated Coconut (DCN) — the Volume Category
Sri Lanka supplies approximately 75,000 mt of desiccated coconut per year, making it one of the world’s top three exporters. DCN is used across confectionery, bakery, cereal, and health food manufacturing. Sri Lankan DCN is processed to European Union maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides, which is the most stringent standard globally.
Available grades: Fine (for confectionery and pastry), Medium (baking and cereals), Coarse (decorative and snack applications), Long Thread (specialty), and Chips (toasted or natural for trail mix). High-fat (65% fat) and reduced-fat (20–25% fat) versions available from most exporters.
Coconut Activated Carbon — the Industrial Category
Coconut shell charcoal is the feedstock for producing some of the highest-grade activated carbon available commercially. The hard, dense shell structure of the coconut creates an unusually high pore volume when carbonised and activated. Sri Lankan coconut shell activated carbon with an iodine value of 900–1,100 mg/g is used in pharmaceutical water treatment, gold cyanidation processes, and food & beverage decoloration.
Buyers in this category should request a full Certificate of Analysis (COA) per batch covering: iodine number, methylene blue value, moisture content, ash content, and hardness number. SGS or Bureau Veritas third-party inspection is standard for container loads.
APCC Membership and What It Means
Sri Lanka is a founding member of the Asian & Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), an intergovernmental organisation that sets quality standards and trade benchmarks for coconut products across member countries. APCC membership means Sri Lankan exporters operate under a quality framework that is recognised in trade negotiations and import inspections across Asia-Pacific markets.
For buyers sourcing for markets in India, Thailand, Malaysia, or the Philippines, APCC certification from the exporter may provide expedited customs clearance or preferential treatment under bilateral trade agreements.
Documentation for Coconut Products
Beyond the standard Certificate of Origin (EDB) and Bill of Lading, coconut products require:
- Phytosanitary Certificate: Required for coir products and any coconut product shipped to the US, Australia, Japan, and most EU member states. Issued by Sri Lanka’s Department of Agriculture.
- Health Certificate: Required for food-grade products (VCO, DCN, CMP) destined for EU markets — confirms the product meets EU food safety standards.
- Transaction Certificate (TC): For organic-labelled products, the TC from the certifying body must accompany every shipment. The exporter’s organic certificate alone is not sufficient.
- SGS / Bureau Veritas Inspection Report: Standard for container loads of industrial products (activated carbon, coir) — confirms specification compliance before shipment.
