Apparel is Sri Lanka’s number-one export, around US$5 billion a year, close to half of all national exports. More importantly for a buyer, the country is a recognized global hub for ethical, high-quality garment manufacturing, with deep capability in activewear, intimates, knitwear and more. Global brands from Victoria’s Secret to Marks & Spencer, GAP and Ralph Lauren manufacture there.
This is the hub for sourcing apparel and garments from Sri Lanka. Each linked playbook is written for trade buyers and brands. It is sourcing information, not legal or audit advice.
Why Sri Lanka, for apparel buyers
- Ethical reputation: the JAAF “Garments Without Guilt” positioning + green/carbon-neutral factories make it a de-risked origin for brands under ESG scrutiny.
- Specialist capability: a global force in activewear/sportswear and intimates/lingerie, plus knit, woven, loungewear, swimwear and childrenswear.
- Duty efficiency: Sri Lanka holds EU GSP+, a meaningful tariff advantage on apparel into the EU with valid rules-of-origin.
- Quality & reliability: decades of supplying the most demanding global brands.

What every apparel buyer should clarify
- Compliance: current social audit (SMETA/BSCI) + corrective-action close-out, and WRAP/SA8000 where required; product certs (GOTS/OEKO-TEX) for organic/skin-safe lines.
- Commercial basis: CMT (cut-make-trim) vs full-package / OEM private label, and the MOQ per style/colour.
- Transparency: the named factory and any sub-contracted units.
- HS & duty: knit (Ch. 61) vs woven (Ch. 62); confirm with the HS code finder and claim EU GSP+ where eligible.
