The golden root of the island.

Ground Sri Lankan turmeric, deep in colour and aroma.

### About turmeric powder

Turmeric powder is ground from the dried rhizome of Curcuma longa, a plant of the ginger family known in Sri Lanka as kaha. Rhizomes are boiled, dried and milled to a fine yellow-orange powder.

Its color comes from curcuminoids, mainly curcumin. Turmeric powder is commonly traded by curcumin content (often about 2 to 5%), mesh size, moisture and color. Because ground spices can be adulterated with colors or fillers, buyers often ask for testing.

#### Common uses

- Curries and curry powder blends
- Natural yellow color for food
- Golden milk, teas and beverages
- Supplements and capsules

#### Storage and documents

Store sealed, cool and dark; turmeric powder typically keeps one to two years but fades with light. Buyers of organic product also ask for the organic certificate and a transaction certificate valid for their market. Importers commonly ask for a certificate of analysis covering moisture, volatile oil, ash and microbiology, plus aflatoxin and pesticide residue results for markets such as the EU, a phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of origin. Exact grade, packing, MOQ and price are confirmed on the quote.

#### What to include in a quote request

A clear request usually states the form (whole, cut or ground), the grade or specification bought to, such as moisture, volatile oil, density or size limits, the quantity per shipment and how often, the packing (bulk bags, cartons or retail packs), the destination port and the Incoterm, for example FOB Colombo or CIF. Mentioning the food safety standard or residue limits of the destination market helps the supplier confirm the right lot.
