The rice varieties Sri Lankan households cook every day, packed for grocers abroad.

Sri Lankans cook their own rice varieties, which are hard to find abroad. Keeri samba, a small-grained aromatic rice, is used for biryani and festive meals; samba and nadu are everyday rices; red raw rice keeps its bran. Sri Lanka exported about US$10 million of these everyday rices in 2025, mostly to markets with Sri Lankan communities. #### Export rules

Sri Lanka has at times restricted rice exports to protect local supply. We confirm that the export is permitted when we quote, and the crop year of the rice.
