## HS Code for Ceylon Cinnamon

Whole Ceylon cinnamon (quills, sticks, chips) is HS 0906.11. Ground cinnamon is HS 0906.20. Cassia is not Ceylon cinnamon, and whole cassia has its own code, 0906.19.

These are HS-6 codes, the same in every country. Sri Lanka’s export tariff splits 0906.11 further by grade and packing, and the importing country adds its own digits that set the duty rate. Always confirm the full tariff line in the destination country before you ship.

### Why 0906.11 and 0906.19 matter

Most “cinnamon” sold worldwide is cassia. Only true Ceylon cinnamon is classified as 0906.11. Declaring cassia as Ceylon cinnamon is a misdeclaration, and some buyers and inspectors check it with a botanical identity test. Ceylon cinnamon is also much lower in coumarin than cassia, which is why supplement and food makers specify it.

When you buy whole Ceylon cinnamon, ask for 0906.11 on the invoice and certificate of origin. Once it is ground, the botanical difference no longer changes the code: both are 0906.20. That makes a lab test the only way to prove the origin of a powder.

### Grades and the code

Every quill grade, from Alba through the Continental (C), Mexican (M) and Hamburg (H) grades, is 0906.11 while it is whole. So are the broken grades used for grinding and extraction: quillings, featherings and chips. The grade changes the price and Sri Lanka’s national sub-line, not the HS-6 code.
